LIVE ELECTION UPDATE

7:52 p.m. The popular vote is close, Obama at 51 percent and McCain at 48 percent. But the electoral vote is a stretch. Right now Obama has 206 electoral votes and McCain has 141 votes. Two-hundred seventy electoral votes are needed to win.

7:56 p.m. Polls in California close in less the five minutes. Some people have had to wait an hour or two today to cast their votes. The absentee ballots will be the first to be counted at 8 o'clock. California may set a new voter turnout record tonight.

7:59 p.m. 4 million registered votes in Los Angeles County and half have cast their votes.

8:02 p.m. CBS now estimates that Obama will be the next president. Voters choose the first African American President.

8:04 p.m. Obama Headquarters in Grant Park, Chicago is full of young people.

8:05 p.m. Obama has 283 electoral delegates. He wins the presidency. McCain stands at 145 electoral delegates.

8:12 p.m. Obama takes 96 percent of the Black vote. Obama wins the youth vote overwhelmingly.

8:13 p.m. Obama wins Virgina, a state that has not gone democratic since 1964.

8:15 p.m. Florida goes to Obama. Electoral vote is 323 for Obama and 145 for McCain. Seventy electoral vote still undecided.

8:20 p.m. McCain makes a speech in Arizona. "We have come to the end of a long journey...the American people have spoken." The crowd is "booing" and McCain holds out his hands to ask them to stop. He says Obama deserves his respect.





8:23 p.m. "I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort...to bridge our differences and help restore our prosperity."- McCain

8:25 p.m. Crowd is cheering "John McCain."

8:27 p.m. John McCain thanks a teary eyed Sara Palin.

8:34 p.m. Obama tells McCain he wants to sit down with him and see how they can work together.

8:35 p.m. John McCain's speech was him at his best.

8:38 p.m. Delegate Update: Obama 333, McCain 155

8:44 p.m. 67 percent of precincts reporting.

8:46 p.m. Nevada for Obama.

8:48 p.m. For the first time in history there are 17 women in the US Senate.

8:59 A million people or more are expected in Grant Park.

9:02 Obama begins his acceptance speech....

Now we will witness history.
